CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
He was being watched. It was different from the looks heâd been getting all night. Those were curious; this was predatory.
Malachy ground his teeth together. If it was Marcellus, then he was being played with. If it was someone else, then he was beingâ¦hunted would be a word to describe it.
He attempted to shake his pursuer. It wasnât Marcellusâthis was a new presence entirely and somehow more oppressive. He dipped into a room off of the hall, figuring itâd be another sitting room like the one where Dorian was manning his own personal bar.
What he found was something else entirely.
A naked man, no older than twenty, was strapped to a table in the center of the dimly lit room. The smell of old blood permeated the room, but this man wasnât bleedingâfar from it. A group of vampires surrounded him, and one of the women leaned over him, running the back of her nails down his bare chest where pale flesh bloomed red. He shivered but not in disgustâit was pleasure that trembled his legs.
Malachy shouldâve just gone back to the bar.
The group paid no attention to Malachyâs entrance. He wasnât the only onlooker in the room.
He strained his ears against the music and chatter coming from the ballroom and heard the woman say to someone, âYour turn.â
The man in the finely tailoredâand no doubt just as expensiveâsuit stepped forward. He removed a crop from a hook on the edge of the table and unceremoniously brought it down against the boyâs chest.
Malachy could only watch as the man leaned in and reached his hand in between the boyâs legsâ
âEnjoying the scene?â someone said to him.
He spun to the sound of the voice behind him.
When he had met Acheron, Malachy thought he had laid eyes on the most beautiful man ever seen. He was now learning that every vampire happened to be the most beautiful man in the world. Or woman, he added, thinking of the conversation he just had with Lady Aaliyah.
This vampire had stark white hair loosely wrapped in a braid around his neck. He was pale, his coloring not unlike Aoifeâs. Lithe but not at all waiflike, standing at a height well over six feet, he radiated an ethereal power that forced Malachy to step back and avert his eyes.
Still, Malachy thought he looked familiar. Heâd definitely seen this man before.
âI had been trying to get your attention, but you seemed to be quite taken by the view.â He nodded back toward the table.
Blood rushed to the tips of Malachyâs ears. âI wasnâtââ
âWould you like to join them? Iâm sure they wouldnât object to one more.â
Malachy barked out a laugh. âIâm not really into the whole dominating thing.â
He made an inquisitive noise. âThen maybe youâd like to be the one on the table?â
Malachy was stunned by the manâs boldness. He pushed it down with another laugh. âItâs clearly taken. Would have to wait my turn for that.â
âNonsense.â The man waved a dismissive hand. âA single word from me, and weâd have it to ourselves for as long as we please.
